My Family's First Stay at Club Med South Africa
There are very few opportunities in the travel industry to experience a resort during its very first week of operation. As a travel advisor, experiences like this are invaluable because they allow me to see a property exactly as my clients will while getting to know the team that brings it to life.
This summer, my family of four travelled from Toronto to experience the brand-new Club Med South Africa, and after spending several unforgettable days there, I can confidently say this resort is unlike anything else in the Club Med collection. Combining breathtaking beaches, incredible activities, authentic South African culture, and the opportunity to add a Big Five safari, it offers a vacation that is truly one of a kind.
An Easy Arrival
One of the first things that impressed me was how easy it was to get there. After landing in Durban, our transfer to the resort took just 20 minutes, making it an incredibly convenient destination after a long international flight, especially when travelling with children.
As we pulled into the resort, we were greeted by spectacular views of the Indian Ocean. The open-air lobby is absolutely stunning and perfectly frames the coastline, creating a memorable first impression.
Check-in was everything I have come to expect from Club Med: warm, efficient, and welcoming. Even though the resort had only opened a few days earlier and was already operating at full capacity, everything ran seamlessly.
Shortly after arriving, Chef de Village Barq stopped by to personally welcome us, which immediately made us feel at home. One of the biggest surprises was reconnecting with Vincent, a G.O. I had met several years ago while skiing at Club Med in the French Alps. Those familiar faces and personal connections are part of what makes Club Med feel so special.
After settling in, we headed straight to lunch and chose a table on the outdoor veranda.
As we enjoyed our meal, surfers carved through the waves below while whales surfaced just offshore. It was one of those pinch me moments.
A Room Designed for Families
Our Family Superior Room was thoughtfully designed and worked perfectly for our family of four.
One feature I particularly appreciated was the separate sleeping area for the kids. Having their own space gave everyone a little extra privacy and made the room feel much larger than a traditional hotel room.
The décor is fresh and contemporary, with comfortable beds, plenty of storage, and everything a family needs for a relaxing stay.
Ready for Adventure
Before the next day's activities, we stopped by both the Teens Club and the Surf School to get everyone registered.
Considering the resort was fully booked and had only recently opened, I was amazed at how organized everything was. Equipment was ready, activities were running smoothly, and the staff were enthusiastic and genuinely excited to welcome guests.
Launching a new resort at full occupancy is no small task, yet everything felt polished from the very beginning.
Celebrating a Birthday South African Style
Our visit also happened to coincide with my daughter's birthday, so I reserved a special dinner at the resort's gourmet restaurant.
The menu celebrated traditional South African braai cuisine, featuring beautifully prepared local meats, seafood, and regional flavours.
To end the evening, we enjoyed Amarula, South Africa's famous cream liqueur. Our waiter shared the story behind the marula tree and explained how elephants are naturally drawn to its fruit. It was a wonderful way to learn more about South African culture!
Learning to Surf
One of the biggest highlights of the resort is its surf program.
Whether you have never surfed before or already have experience, the instructors are patient, knowledgeable, and incredibly encouraging.
Watching my family learn together and spend time in the Indian Ocean quickly became one of the most memorable parts of our trip.

One of the reasons I continue recommending Club Med is the incredible value. So much is included, allowing families to stay active without constantly reaching for their wallets.

There was never a shortage of things to do, whether we wanted adventure or relaxation.
Relaxation for Adults
While our teenagers enjoyed their own activities, Kris and I took advantage of the adults-only spaces.
The Exclusive Collection area is beautifully designed and offers a quieter atmosphere with elegant pools, luxurious lounge areas, and a relaxing steam room.
It was the perfect place to recharge before another afternoon of family activities.
Entertainment for Every Age
The family atmosphere at Club Med is what keeps guests coming back year after year.
The kids' splash park and water playground were always full of excitement, while the main pool hosted lively games and activities throughout the day.
One afternoon we joined a fantastic pool party, and another evening we attended a beautiful garden party complete with live music, circus performances, and incredible entertainment.
Even with the resort at full occupancy, it never felt overcrowded.
Add a South African Safari
One of the things that makes Club Med South Africa truly unique is the opportunity to combine your beach vacation with an unforgettable safari.
Guests can easily add a Big Five safari before or after their Club Med stay, creating an itinerary that showcases two completely different sides of South Africa.
Most safari packages include luxury lodge accommodations, professionally guided game drives, delicious meals, and the chance to see lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, and countless other wildlife in their natural habitat.
Imagine surfing the Indian Ocean one day and watching elephants walk past your safari vehicle the next.
There are very few places in the world where you can experience both on the same trip.
My Final Thoughts
Having visited many Club Med resorts around the world, I left incredibly impressed.
The resort offers everything families love about Club Med, including exceptional G.O.s, outstanding kids' programming, world-class activities, excellent dining, and a welcoming atmosphere. At the same time, it introduces experiences that are uniquely South African and unlike anything else in the Club Med collection.
