Tokyo With Kids: A Family Adventure Through Japan’s Most Exciting City
Tokyo completely exceeded my expectations as a family destination.
I recently returned from a custom family adventure through Japan, and I can honestly say it is one of the most exciting, seamless, and surprisingly family friendly destinations I’ve experienced. Tokyo somehow blends ancient traditions with futuristic energy in a way that keeps both parents and children completely captivated.
From peaceful temple mornings to neon filled evenings, every day felt like a new adventure.
If Japan is on your family’s bucket list, here are my personal tips for planning an unforgettable luxury family experience in Tokyo.
Fly Direct from Toronto
If you are travelling with children, make the journey as easy as possible from the start.
Flying direct from Toronto on Air Canada is absolutely worth it. It’s a long flight, but avoiding connections, rushing through airports, and managing exhausted children between terminals makes a huge difference.
Once you land in Tokyo, you want the vacation to begin immediately, not another stressful travel day.
Always Arrange a Private Airport Transfer
Tokyo’s train system is incredible and part of the experience itself.
But after a long international flight with children, navigating crowded stations with luggage while jet lagged is not how you want to start your trip.
I always recommend arranging a private airport transfer on arrival so you can step off the plane and head straight to your hotel comfortably and stress free.
This is one of those small details that elevates the entire experience, and it’s something I happily coordinate for my clients.
Stay in Asakusa for a More Traditional Tokyo Experience
For families, Asakusa is one of my favourite areas to stay.
It feels more traditional, peaceful, and immersive than some of Tokyo’s busier neighbourhoods while still being incredibly convenient. Think lantern lined streets, local restaurants, beautiful temples, and a slower pace that works wonderfully with children.
Balance the Itinerary Carefully
Tokyo is one of those cities where you could easily over schedule yourself.
The best family trips include a thoughtful mix of culture, fun, relaxation, and flexibility.
Some of our favourite experiences included:
• Watching sumo wrestling training in Asakusa
• Exploring teamLab Boarderless TOKYO
• Visiting Sensō ji
• Family cooking classes
• Shopping in Ginza and Harajuku
• Exploring the Fish Market
• Arcades and claw machines for the kids
Having a well planned itinerary changes everything in Tokyo, especially with children. You want enough structure to maximize your time while still leaving room to wander and discover.
This is where having a travel expert becomes invaluable.
Use Jet Lag to Your Advantage
One of my favourite travel tricks in Tokyo is embracing the jet lag instead of fighting it.
Most families naturally wake up extremely early during the first few days. Rather than trying to sleep in, use those quiet early mornings to experience Tokyo before the crowds arrive.
Visiting Sensō ji at sunrise was one of the highlights of the trip. The temple grounds feel peaceful, quiet, and almost magical before the city fully wakes up.
I also recommend planning earlier dinners for the first few nights because everyone tends to crash early anyway.
Tokyo in the early morning feels like an entirely different city.
Visit Café L’Occitane at Shibuya Crossing
One of our favourite stops was visiting Cafe L’Occitane near Shibuya Crossing for their famous crème brûlée.
It’s the perfect afternoon break after shopping, sightseeing, and experiencing the energy of one of Tokyo’s most iconic neighbourhoods.
Sometimes the best family travel moments are the simple ones.
Spend Time in the Parks During Cherry Blossom Season
If you are visiting in spring, make time for Tokyo’s parks and cherry blossoms.
Some of my favourite moments in Japan were simply walking through the parks with coffee in hand while the cherry blossoms floated through the air.
Tokyo has a way of making even ordinary moments feel unforgettable.
Stock Up at 7 Eleven
This may be the best family travel hack in Japan.
Japanese convenience stores are amazing.
Before bed each night, stock up at 7 Eleven, Lawson, or FamilyMart for:
• Fresh fruit
• Yogurt
• Smoothies
• Pastries
• Rice balls
• Snacks for sightseeing days
• Easy breakfast items
Many breakfast spots don’t open until later in the morning, and when your children are awake at 6:00 AM because of jet lag, having snacks ready in the room is a lifesaver.
A Few Final Tokyo Family Tips
A few more things I learned during our trip:
• Pack light because Tokyo involves a lot of walking
• Bring comfortable shoes for everyone
• Leave extra room in your suitcase for shopping
• Download Google Translate before arriving
• Build downtime into every afternoon
• Don’t try to see everything in one trip
• Slow travel works best in Japan
Most importantly, leave room for spontaneity.
Tokyo is one of those rare destinations that surprises you every single day.
