Cruising the Nile: My Unforgettable Journey Through Egypt
Some trips stay with you forever, and my journey through Egypt is absolutely one of them.
From sailing along the timeless Nile River to floating over ancient temples at sunrise in a hot air balloon, every day in Egypt felt surreal in the best possible way. I had dreamed about visiting Egypt for years, but nothing prepared me for how emotional and unforgettable the experience would actually be.
What made the trip even more special was having my go-to local operator for all things custom in Egypt handle every detail. From hotels and guides to transfers and excursions, everything flowed effortlessly, which allowed us to truly relax and soak it all in.
Life on the Nile
Cruising the Nile was easily one of my favorite parts of the trip.
There is something incredibly calming about life on the river. Mornings started with coffee on the deck while watching palm trees, small villages, and farmers along the shoreline drift by. Evenings were my favorite though. After busy days exploring temples and tombs, there was nothing better than sitting outside watching the sunset over the Nile while the warm evening breeze rolled in.
Floating Above the Valley of the Kings
One morning we woke up before dawn for a hot air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings near Luxor, and honestly, it was one of the most breathtaking experiences of my life.
As the balloon lifted into the sky, the sun slowly started rising over the desert and the Nile below us. Everything was silent except for the occasional sound of the burner firing above our heads. Watching the landscape light up with the first colors of morning felt almost unreal.
Seeing ancient temples and the valley from above gave me a completely different appreciation for Egypt. It’s one of those moments that photographs never fully capture.
Exploring the Tombs of the Pharaohs
Later that day, we explored the tombs inside the Valley of the Kings itself, which somehow felt even more incredible after seeing the area from the air.
Walking through the tombs was like stepping into another world. The colors and carvings inside are still unbelievably vibrant after thousands of years. Every wall tells a story, and every chamber feels filled with history.
This was definitely one of those days where good walking shoes, sunscreen, and lots of water were essential. Egypt’s heat is no joke, especially when you’re spending full days outdoors exploring archaeological sites. Lightweight clothing and staying hydrated made a huge difference throughout the trip.
My Favorite Site in Egypt
Out of all the places we visited, my favorite was the Temple of Hathor.
There was just something special about it. The temple felt quieter and more intimate than some of the larger sites, and the preservation inside was incredible. The detailed ceilings, vibrant colors, and astronomical carvings were absolutely stunning.
It had this peaceful atmosphere that really stayed with me long after we left.
Evenings at the Hilton Luxor
My favorite hotel during the trip was definitely the Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa.
After a day long sightseeing, coming back to the hotel felt like such a treat. The views over the Nile were beautiful, especially at sunset, and the whole property had this peaceful energy that made it easy to completely unwind.
The Food I’m Still Thinking About
Egyptian food completely won me over.
My favorite meal by far was Hawawshi. Think of it like an Egyptian take on a smash burger…crispy, juicy, intensely flavorful, and packed with perfectly seasoned meat, all tucked inside toasted, crunchy bread. It’s the kind of comfort food that’s simple at first bite but completely addictive, and I found myself looking for it on every menu.
And dessert? Without question, Kunafa.
Warm, sweet, crunchy, and filled with creamy goodness, it became my weakness by the end of the trip.
Cairo, the Pyramids, and the Energy of the City
We wrapped up our journey in Cairo, and it was the perfect ending to the trip.
Seeing the Great Pyramid of Giza in person was every bit as awe-inspiring as you’d imagine. No matter how many photos you’ve seen, nothing compares to standing beside them for the first time.
We also visited the stunning Grand Egyptian Museum, which was incredibly impressive. The combination of ancient artifacts and modern design made the entire experience feel world-class.
One of my favorite nights was in Cairo where we spent the evening wandering through Khan el-Khalili. The market was full of life, with glowing lanterns, spices, music, and endless little shops tucked into narrow alleyways. It felt chaotic in the best possible way.
Yes, vendors will approach you often, but honestly, a simple smile and “La Shukran” worked perfectly almost every time.
A Moment I Never Expected
One of the most unexpected experiences from the trip happened while onboard the ship during a special travel industry event.
I ended up being interviewed by Egyptian news about tourism and safety in Egypt, sharing my personal experience traveling through the country.
Before visiting, I know many travelers naturally have questions about safety in Egypt, but throughout the trip I genuinely felt welcomed, comfortable, and well taken care of. The hospitality we experienced everywhere we went was incredible.
Final Thoughts
Egypt completely exceeded my expectations.
Of course the history is extraordinary, but what stayed with me most were the moments in between. Watching sunsets over the Nile. Floating silently above the Valley of the Kings at sunrise.
Egypt isn’t just a place you visit. It’s a place you feel.
And long after coming home, I know a part of me will always still be there.
